i'll admit, yes, it's yet another habit i've assimilated from my brother and made my own. right now, my "to-be-listened-to" # of podcasts stands at 81 total, from around 26 different sources- some daily updated others very sporadically. now, i don't plan on listening to them *all* but i subscribe, and pick and choose what looks good... but it *is* starting to go runaway train on me[, not unlike my comic book collection].
this post is a placeholder tho; i'm busy now, but eventually i'll get around to making a list of what my podcast feeds are and why [as requested..]; but in the meanwhile, i'm wondering: does anyone else have a do-not-miss podcast? you dont have to be all pokemon* like me, but what else do you listen to?

We lost the game, by the way. 69 - 62. Saw the results online right before I went to bed. I *could* watch the rest of the game via highlight now... but I'd have to watch the entire game - no skipping ahead on those streams, remember?

At least the US women scored their gold... Men's will go for Bronze vs Great Britain tomorrow morning at 7am.

Got up and managed to catch the second half of the US vs CAN men's wc basketball semifinal game start. Incredibly close match with the spread being 5 points at most, lots of back and forth. US keeps the lead for the whole game, but manages to lose it right at the end with a 3 pointer by CAN at 16. left... 2 more traded FGs and the game goes into overtime.
US takes the lead 15 seconds in to the 5min OT, but CAN manages to keep it close- and about halfway through the OT, CAN manages to take the lead for the first time the entire game! Some nice camera work really showed off the anguish of the US team, as their top scorers foul out and Canada rallies the troops... Lots more fouls and missed foul shots for both sides, and we foul CA yet again when we're only up by 1 point, but there's still 11 seconds left on the clock! CA misses one, makes one... the clock winds down as the US misses the shot- and a Canadian player *ALMOST* makes an amazing 3/4 court shot to win, but it *just* misses- and we go into DOUBLE OVERTIME.
2OT begins... more traded FGs, and CA manages a great steal at mid-court, but can't follow through. At this point around two minutes or so in, US is up by two, but... someone got fouled? and...

AND THATS IT. THE UNIVERSALSPORTS.COM WEB FEED DIED. WITH LESS THAN 3 MINUTES LEFT IN A DOUBLE OT GAME.

Sunday morning, 10am... It's bad enough that the only *good* coverage is the live Beijing time streaming feeds, but now even THOSE are untrustworthy? NBCU has HOW many channels on tv and cable, and this is the biggest Paralympics EVER, but... no room for cripples on television, I guess. International spectacle of sport, thousands upon thousands living their dream... boy, I sure am glad there's room for great fare such as 'Greatest American Dog", though.

The Beijing Paralympic web feed died.
During the Men's Wheelchair Basketball game between USA and Canada.
Two minutes into a double overtime, less than 3 left.
I just wanted to register my incredible displeasure over not just this game, but coverage of the Paralympics overall. Beijing went all-out and is spending close to the same amount on these games as the regular Olympics, and this ONE website [univeralsports.com] is the only way to watch?
And not even in a convenient way; the BIG, popular sports may have individual clips, but MANY sports get little to no coverage at all. And if they *are* lucky enough to have a camera present, the only way to luck into seeing that is through the daily highlight feed- a 4.5 hour solid block of streamed video that CAN'T be saved, downloaded, or skipped through.

I don't mean to link to every single thing on The Big Picture, but Alan's knocked it out of the park again with these fantastic photos of the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games. These sports look more difficult than the ones at the regular Olympics. Take, for instance, goalball:

Participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it, into the opponents' goal. They must use the sound of the bell to judge the position and movement of the ball. Games consist of two 10 minute halves. Blindfolds allow partially sighted players to compete on an equal footing with blind players.
The Games aren't being broadcast on American TV but you can catch them on the web at Universal Sports.

REAL LIFE. yes.

um. my bbq was fun. always starts out as a superdense ball of STRESSfrom unnecessarry worry and overplanning... but i fades after awhile. guess the only way to learn is falling in the deep end; lots of lessons to learn, like not playing halo 3 for 8 hours straight. i need photos from people... ooh- the internet-sourced bbq'd chocolate banana went gangbusters- kind of didn't even really NEED the ice cream on the side, could take it solo / savory too... got a couple variations on deck in my head. BUT-

bbq season's almost gone... summer's basically over...? anticipating the two good weeks of fall now, where its nice and temperate before hoodie weather comes back.
oh. blue was the clear winner for the paint colors... might go tonal- awesome complex deep gray blue on the big wall, and a lighter silver?grey blue for the others... i'll never be done.

the giant backlog of comics is back, with a vengeance... allthough with that bbq over, i've got free time again, kind of. but all i want to do is play video games and surf the internets.

ahh, the PATIO. phase 2 is underway; there's a heap of gravel in the drive, pallets of bricks and a mini-scoop / bobcat in the backyard, and dirt everywhere.

my LAPTOP is fine *functionally*... but it's one of those Dells with an nVidia chip- that WILL fail eventually. to slow it down, it kicks the fan to 100% waaay before it needs it... mine is on like, 90% of the time, its like nails on chalkboard... the frustration is making me look at those netbooks. one good reason, laptop, i'm telling you.

how long will men in women's jeans stay popular? i'm incredibly tired of super-skinny, low-rise guys jeans. everywhere i look, the narrow style is standard; even the 'relaxed' and 'loose' cuts are a hairs' width away from normal. the only non-skinny pant one can find is raver-wear nylon parachute-y deals. fashion has made the rounds of recalling past decades... when can it hit the 90's again and i can find me a decent pair of slightly wide leg / baggy jeans? i've got a pair or three left from ages ago... and their materials' thickness is rapidly approaching an old t-shirt.

just a reminder for those beverage snobs out there: Passover is almost upon us, and for soda dorks like me [non-Jewish ones, anyway], that means one thing- Kosher Coke! keep an eye out if you have a smaller /healthy /ethnic minded grocery nearby, the non-HFCS /Kosher Coke is far superior to the normal stuff, trust me. Load up if you find some :) the only other way to get this type during the year is if you've got a grocer with a great ethnic section, as imported Mexican Coke is also made with sugarcane. Using sugarcane over the HFCS for a sweetener gives the soda a less overbearingly sweet flavor, and it's foamier /fizzier as well. SO much better.

-which soda brand was it where it had a commercial boasting only containing 5 all natural ingredients?? HFCS was one of them. what a crock.

EDIT: one of my favorite food blogs, Serious Eats, provides some more information on the subject here. most important- look for yelow caps on 2L cokes and white caps on 2L pepsi. :)

day19 out of whenever i finish this crap [and not even counting the time *before* i decided to call the doctors], and understandably i'm not in the greatest mood... so of course it's the perfect time to field a call from my mother. every inquisition she makes about my health i answer, truthfully- and i wasn't being short [at first], just unbelievably tired. yet every time, before i was done responding to her question, she cuts me off talking about something else- and then blames me for not answering her question, when if she had just been listening, and not preparing her next statement, i had JUST answered before i was rudely cut off yet again. repeat x12, and i have to make this conversation end somehow as it was giving me a stress headache. i forget her last statement [darn.], but it was in that parent-to-bad-puppy voice, as if i had just done something very wrong. whaaat. ever. i never understood how she can so effortlessly turn a bad situation into sympathy for herself, i swear.

crazy holiday season. but its over, so now that thats taken care of... in the new year i wanna get at least 2 big house projects in. no reason to not do them ALL, but with having to replace the van unexpectedly, it'd be saner to not do it all, and letting my finances recover some. definitely gonna finish the outside pavers... but besides that, there's the actual plants and landscaping, finishing the basement, painting most of the big rooms, getting hardwood put in, redoing the master bath vanity/ add that br window, figuring out the closet/laundry room door?/pass-thru...
and then then the myriad smaller projects, like replacing light fixtures, possibly a french door to the patio, redo the doorknobs, get the kitchen backsplash in...
paint is obviously the easiest of the "big" ones; i've got basic ideas on color, but it's finding the right no/low VOC paint and seeing what will pair up. that, and either hiring people or um... enlisting some friendly help.. paint party, anyone?

most of [the 5 of] you that read this know i've been going thru weird and crazy shit lately, and that after this last bout of insanity i'd finally had enough- i've been researching since mid-sunday to replace this frustrating piece of machinery.
and somehow, it earned a reprieve. evidently, the network was the problem, and not the motherboard on this computer that had failed. but it was the oddest of circumstances: sunday was when the network on thic pc failed.. today upon coming back from a couple errands, gar finds that his room comps are down; further checking confirms that the wall outlets are *all* gone. luckily, some unknown neighbor has an open wireless router, and i'm able to use that.. but no notices in my comcast email. a dozen router /modem /switch /etc resets were futile, and eventually we got around to test the net connection coming straight out of the modem itself... NOTHING.
made the march of shame back upstairs to call it in to [frickin] comcast, and had JUST dialed when i hear "WTF?"
gar rebooted his laptop and went to log into the neighbor-fi and was told he was on the home wi-fi network. we ran around the house to check the others and sure enough, the network was back up. how it managed to resurrect itself, no clue.
so, we're back to square 1. this pc still locks up randomly, and it's hard drives occasionaly freak out and howl some weird noise, but it's basically okay. decent specs even [cpu/memory/hd-wise], it's just being the temperamental 2-year old it *is*, i guess.
but the supergeek in me doesn't know exactly how to feel... one part is glad everythings fixed, however miraculously; the other is sad i don't get to satisfy my irritated self and replace this current machine.
especially when i was preeeetty close to convincing myself i needed to spend an inordinate amount of $ on something like this. or this.

whatever. nerd rant off. happy turkey day, people!

..."This work represents a tremendous scientific milestone -- the biological equivalent of the Wright Brothers' first airplane," said Dr. Robert Lanza, chief science officer of Advanced Cell Technology, which has been trying to extract stem cells from cloned human embryos.

Here’s the basic principle: You lay this controller on your leg, table or arm of a chair and all the buttons are available on the top surface. The gag is that each of the five sections is removable and you can plug them anywhere you want. This not only makes the controller work for both left and right handed use (simply mirror the layout) but it also allows the user to optimize the button placement on a game-by-game basis. Even if the user has partial use of both hands it should still be easier to work with than a standard controller.

not the movie, altho that was pretty funny,

wasting the day away, waiting for the ADT tech to replace something on my house alarm. 12-5pm window... how boring. and this the 2nd wait; first time i waited 'til 5:30, and an operator called me saying the tech ran out of parts, and he was too far from base to pick up more and make it back in the workday... blah blah blah, so that was almost two months ago, and here we are, finally on the reschedule date.

which also happens to be the day the new kohl's nearby is having its grand opening. great timing.

so, i've been cleaning a little... [doesn't look like i've done anything tho, gettin messy again], watched some special features on the halo 3 disc... still got about 30 emails to sort thru... made a coupla phone calls...

what else has been going on... um... well yeah halo 3 came out, beat that on Legendary with my cuz... frustratingly hard at a coupla points but not as hard as i feared... then again, ive never finished the original *or* halo 2. we did find a little "cheat", kind of.. really just exploiting the way the game is built. for many of the heavy vehicles [read: enemy tanks, etc], if you use a medium vehicle w/ a weapon or turret, [chopper, ghost, etc], you can fire on the tank while you're WELL out of range of its fire, and it will still deal damage. made things alot easier more than once.

ok, so im a big nerd and was up til 3 playing it again, and it's still obviously on the brain. i do other stuff too...

oh. i shared what "goatse" was with a friend. heheh, she asked tho! [long answer short: one of the worst internet memes ever. sick.] and i WARNED her what it was instead of just sending her hello.jpg. [link goes to WIKI, not the pic. i swear.]

seeing an early show before the schools are out are pretty fun; you get a mostly empty theater at a cheaper price. such was true yesterday when me n gar caught resident evil: extinction. [mini review: pretty good; no more, no less than what was expected really. course, we mst3k'd it like we always do.] the one thing that was pretty UNcool was periodically hearing a BABY cry. who brings their kid to an R rated movie?! and we're talking BABY baby, as in, less than a year-old, still in a baby carrier baby. we couldnt figure out which was worse, the ~8-10 year olds 300, or this.

i wonder if that *mother* was old enough to see the movie.

Weezer in the studio: Album 6 due in 2008!

(to regular watchers of weezer.com: yes, youve seen this already. To those who havent been tuning in, check it out!)

Dateline: an undisclosed location in Southern California, deep inside weezer lines. Im sitting in a large room that normally doesnt serve as a place where bands record their albums, watching weezer, well, record their album. But then this band isnt known for doing things normally. And this album, their 6th, is sounding pretty far from 'normal' so far.

There wont be any song titles or other detailed in-progress info in this report, but I can describe the vibe in the room and the sound in the air. The vibe is healthy, full of dialogue, cooperation, forward thinking and interested experimentation. The sound is definitely weezer, but not quite like any weezer I've heard before. Or rather, not like any one style that weezer has ever tried, but a fresh combination with some new flavors on top. It sounds as if the band has grown into a new land that they had previously only skirted around the edges of - a land where arrangements are getting adventurous, where song structures, lengths and feels are given plenty of sunlight and fresh water and allowed to grow into what the songs demand. It sounds really cool. Like an excellent music farm. Or perhaps a food co-op.

The band started this session on Monday July 9 and is scheduled to continue recording here till October. They came into this session with 6 weeks of earlier springtime work under their belts, which yielded perhaps half of an unfinished album. Now theyve got their sights set on the other half, and all the overdubs and touches the final set of tracks will need to be ready for the world in '08. Based on what I've seen over these past 2 weeks here at Camp Weez, they should have no trouble delivering the goods.

go, do it, now.

ok. so SOMEthing in my firefox wanted an auto-update. usually, they go smoothly. but this time around.. eeeeeeverything went back to it's own presets, INCLUDING the bookmarks folder. granted, i was pretty much asking for this seeing as i had ..wow 34 extensions installed [holy.. wtf 1 sec]
..ok just whittled that down to 22. yeah still alot but that's why ffox is cool; they're all functional. but yeah- if you've ever seen me in person surfing los internets, you'd know my crazy extensive folders upon folders upon poorly-organized folders of bookmarks is my livelihood. so that 15min or so panic attack i just was NO fun, lemme tell ya. LUCKILY, i remembered i had a "recent" backup.. which i just now found and restored a good 99%, i think. thing is, theey're recent as of the end of JUNE, so although i'm relieved most are back.. that super geeky part is still mourning those last 2 months' worth of links lost. i really gotta do that weekly and keep it on one of those usb keychain drives.

this wasn't nearly as interesting as i thought it would be. whatever

i kinda wish i was there.. 2 nobody slackers from who met in high school who decided to put together a video game-centric web comic, Penny Arcade, that now manages close to 2 million page views a day, are in the midst of their 4th year of throwing their own convention, the Penny Arcade Expo. console, pc, tabletop, collectible card gaming, developer talks, new game demos, live music guests, topical panels, and the yearly Omegathon- where contestants face off in a series of challenges to with a HUGE prize and a chance to defend their crown at the next PAX. it's what's turning out to be the yearly mecca for ubernerds from every walk [walk, haha] in life.

ahem. sorry for the big huge geek-out there. i've spent a LOT of time gaming already this weekend [GW preorder sneak peek] and saw this writeup of the goings-on of friday. sounds like tons of fun; in particular wil wheaton's keynote address seemed pretty enjoyable. check the con's schedule, too. lots to do and see for us nerd-type beings.

granted, i didn't even manage make it to Wizard World Chicago, where my cousin's girlfriend [WHERE'S THAT BLOG HUH] had her own exhibition table.. but hey.. the PNW seems to be getting pretty popular nowadays, right [H? heheh]?

forgot this morning was the latest apple hardware refresh.. new imac, skinny as hell, sweet looking.. updated mini, pretty awesome. too bad i got that mini-sized celery m machine a coupla weeks ago.. ilife, iwork, .mac.. i'd care more about if i HAD a mac already. no ws ipod; supposedly by the fall? we'll see. the big seller for me is that crazy tiny little keyboard. after years of buying giant sized natural keyboards, and thinking i've broken them.. ended up with a tiny keyboard as a temporary replacement, and fell in love with the desktop-size savings. this new apple keyboard is just sooo tiny.. wow. seriously contemplating that one.

this just in from comic-con: Warren Ellis will be taking over writing duties on Astonishing X-Men.

Warren f'n Ellis, the self-proclaimed "internet jesus" himself. i can not WAIT for this. how long has it been that i've been trumpeting him as one of my favorite writers. he's a sick, twisted, angry, hilarious, frightening genius. ever since i "found" Transmetropolitan online and just devoured it [ask me to share, i'm sure its still on a hard drive somewhere], i've bought and read mostly everything he's written since. while his creator-owned works definitely aren't for the squeamish, [in fact, *way* beyond what many 'm for mature' titles venture..] his recent work with marvel doing NextWave, newuniversal, and most recently on the Thunderbolts title shows he can tune his style into something as mass market as one of the top X-titles. Not that he's lost his edge, either: I JUST today recieved his new novel, "Crooked Little Vein" and while i'm only a chapter into it, he definitely deserves more.. um.. yeah, how do you praise a demented mastermind? iive got so much anticipation already built up .. i can't wait to see what he has in store for the biggest of underwear perverts.

so at the bbq, we're all chatting around the table, and the mom + sdad bring the conversation around to how their trip to the phil.s will be pretty cool, but not great because our aunt won't be able to show them around due to previous duties with the convent [she's a nun]. being food coma'd and slap happy, i randomly think of this:

Halo 3 Co-Op Heads Offline

While a two-player co-op mode has been confirmed for Halo 3 (player two assumes the role of the Arbiter) it looks like it'll be available in LAN or split-screen only as Bungie struggles to get the mode running over Xbox Live.

OH, that and the fact that while running errands today, out of hundreds of big-ass SUVs on the road i observed today, only ONE of them had more than one person in it, and it was carrying a load of wood, being used as an actual Utility Vehicle. but that's another post.
